Blue Shield of California

Organization Overview

Blue Shield of California (BSC) has been a leading non-profit provider of quality health insurance plans for over 63 years, with a mission to ensure all Californians have access to high-quality health care at a reasonable price. Founded with the name of California Physicians' Service (CPS) in 1939, it now has 3.2 million members, 4,500 employees, one of the largest provider networks and more than 20 office locations, providing a wide range of commercial and government products throughout the state. The company contributes $30 million annually to the Blue Shield of California Foundation to fund nonprofit organizations that improve access to quality health care in California.

BSC strives to maintain its position as a pioneer in the healthcare industry, continually seeking to find new ways to give back to the community. In its early stages, BSC was the first health plan in the nation to offer coverage for pre-existing conditions under group programs. Additionally, BSC adjusted their coverage to include individual and family memberships offered through non-group programs. In the mid 1980’s, BSC was the first company to offer full coverage for the first heart transplant.
